What is a well pump?

Unlike municipal water systems that provide water to local residence and businesses, rural homeowners need to supply their own water. A well pump is used to pump water from a ground water source into the home.

There are various types of well pumps but submersible well pumps are most common in Durham Region.

How long does a well pump last?

While there are various factors that will determine the lifespan of a well pump, a typical submersible well pump will last for approximately 10 years. However, if your well pump only gets moderate use, it could last 15 years.

What is a jet well pump?

Jet pumps are used to draw water from a ground water source into a home. Jet pumps are located in the home, generally in the basement. There are two types of jet pumps - shallow and deep - and are used with a pressure tank. Shallow pumps use a single pipe to to draw water from up to 25 feet, while deep pumps use a two pipe system and can draw water from between 25 and 90 feet.

What is a submersible well pump?

Submersible well pumps are the most common type of well pump. They are installed inside the well and pump water into your home as it is needed.

What type of well do I have?

A dug/bored well is approximately 48 inches in diameter with a concrete lid on top, usually no more than 30 feet in depth.

A drilled well is typically 8 inches in diameter with a metal casing pipe and metal cap a few inches above the ground. A drilled well can go more than 250 feet in depth.
